As a hybrid mattress, the DreamCloud fulfills many of our standards for what a excellent bed should provide. With eight unique layers of support and comfort, the DreamCloud uses all the proper materials in its construction. Casper Wave vs Dreamcloud
From the tufted cashmere cover that gives great airflow, to the gel memory foam at the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud is designed to deliver a cooler night’s sleep. Below that are a mix of polyurethane foam and latex layers, meaning this bed contains better quality comfort materials than most other hybrid beds.

Despite the fact that it uses multiple memory foam layers, there’s no hug or significant contouring to the bed. If you’re looking to sink into a mattress, then move on from the DreamCloud.

A pocketed coil support center keeps you aligned all night long, especially for all you back sleepers on the market.

Construction Casper Wave vs Dreamcloud

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all the distinct materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Casper Wave vs Dreamcloud

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft texture up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant relaxation.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of the three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations promotes more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in moderating temperature as the distances between them permit steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the base of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

Now I want to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other individuals to present their view too. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is really firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from this bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than just explaining the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally distributed throughout the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the mattress and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to find out what it’ll feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. Casper Wave vs Dreamcloud

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.

Sinkage Test

While buying a new mattress, the majority of people wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Casper Wave vs Dreamcloud

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your bed with a partner and need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, it is likely to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it will provide.

I am especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
