Construction Beautyrest Black vs Dreamcloud
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play here, I’m stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Beautyrest Black vs Dreamcloud
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The middle of the three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the addition of those small ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the spaces between them allow for steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the base of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the whole mattress.
After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying mild hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from these springs.
At this point I want to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the general firmness level of this mattress, I invited three additional individuals to give their view too. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you can see from the mattress.
As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s clear that this mattress is really firm.
I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it’s definitely a solid bed. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from this bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Rather than just explaining the feel of the mattress for you, I chose to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally dispersed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the mattress and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to shift across these positions with relative ease.
If you intend on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like if another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. Beautyrest Black vs Dreamcloud
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome solution for couples.
While buying a new bed, the majority of people want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Beautyrest Black vs Dreamcloud
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re going to encounter some instant sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combination will appeal to a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.
If you’re going to share your mattress with a spouse and need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will give you.
I am especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
