Because it’s a hybrid mattress, the DreamCloud meets a number of our standards for what a quality bed must have. With eight exceptional layers of comfort and support, the DreamCloud utilizes all of the proper materials in its construction. Awara vs Dreamcloud
From the tufted cashmere cover that provides good airflow, to the gel memory foam at the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud was made to promote a cooler night’s sleep. Below that are a mixture of memory foam and latex layers, meaning this mattress contains better quality comfort materials than most other hybrid beds.

Despite the fact that it uses multiple memory foam layers, there is no hug or significant contouring to the bed. If you are looking to sink into a mattress, move on from the DreamCloud.

A pocketed coil support center keeps you aligned all night long, particularly for all you back sleepers out there.

Construction Awara vs Dreamcloud

The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all the distinct materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Awara vs Dreamcloud

construction

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The middle of these three layers is especially essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of those tiny ventilations promotes more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the spaces between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying mild hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from these springs.

At this point I want to let you know that individuals of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving only my view on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three additional people to give their opinion too. This will provide you with a better feeling of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.

firmness test

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compared to the market norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s apparent that this bed is pretty firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a solid bed. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of this bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to simply describing the feel of the mattress to you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do so, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map

Back – When on my back, my weight was evenly dispersed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to know what it will feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. Awara vs Dreamcloud

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

motion transfer test

The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

When purchasing a new mattress, most people want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Awara vs Dreamcloud

sinkage test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I’m particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did at the center. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
