Construction Awara Or Dreamcloud
The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Awara Or Dreamcloud
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft texture up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the addition of these small ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the spaces between them permit steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from these springs.
Now I want to note that people of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the general firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three other people to present their opinion too. This will provide you with a much better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of this mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the market standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is really firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you from the bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Rather than simply describing the feel of the mattress for you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can find the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. However, I felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.
If you intend on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to find out what it will feel like if another person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress from the other. Awara Or Dreamcloud
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great solution for couples.
When buying a new bed, the majority of people wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Awara Or Dreamcloud
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re likely to encounter some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.
If you are going to share your mattress with a partner and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it’ll give you.
I am particularly interested to see whether the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.
Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did at the middle. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
