Construction Are Dreamcloud Matresses Made In China?

The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all the distinct materials at play here, I’m stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Are Dreamcloud Matresses Made In China?

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The center of these three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at releasing heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations promotes more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in moderating temperature as the spaces between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the base of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting light hand pressure to the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.

Now I’d like to note that people of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the overall firmness level of this mattress, I enlisted three other people to give their view as well. This will provide you with a much better sense of the firmness range you may see from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this mattress is pretty firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you from the bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to simply explaining the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I put a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, therefore I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the mattress and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and from the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your bed with a spouse, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like if another individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Are Dreamcloud Matresses Made In China?

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

While buying a new mattress, the majority of men and women want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Are Dreamcloud Matresses Made In China?

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I’m especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.

Laying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Going closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
