Construction Amore vs Dreamcloud

The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all the different materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Amore vs Dreamcloud

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft texture up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The center of these three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations promotes more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in regulating temperature as the distances between them permit steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.

At this point I’d like to note that people of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other individuals to give their view too. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you may see from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the mattress, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compared to the market norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is clear that this mattress is really firm.

I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from this bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than just explaining the feel of this DreamCloud for you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly dispersed throughout the mattress, therefore I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. However, I felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and from the mattress, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like when the other individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Amore vs Dreamcloud

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

When buying a new mattress, most people want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Amore vs Dreamcloud

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.

I’m especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
