As a hybrid mattress, the DreamCloud meets a number of our standards for what a quality mattress should have. With eight exceptional layers of support and comfort, the DreamCloud utilizes all the right materials in its construction. Allswell vs Dreamcloud
From the tufted cashmere cover that gives good airflow, to the gel memory foam at the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud is designed to deliver a cooler night’s sleep. Below that are a mix of memory foam and latex layers, meaning this bed includes better quality relaxation materials than most other hybrid mattresses.

Despite the fact that it utilizes multiple memory foam layers, there is not any hug or significant contouring to the mattress. If you’re looking to sink into a mattress, proceed from the DreamCloud.

A pocketed coil support core keeps you aligned all night long, particularly so for all you back sleepers on the market.

Construction Allswell vs Dreamcloud

The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Allswell vs Dreamcloud

construction

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The middle of these three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at releasing heat, so the inclusion of these tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperatures as the spaces between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the base of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting mild hand pressure into the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from these springs.

At this point I’d like to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the overall firmness level of this DreamCloud, I invited three other individuals to present their view as well. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you may see from the bed.

firmness test

As you can find in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s apparent that this bed is pretty firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to just explaining the feel of this mattress for you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map

Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally distributed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to shift across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to find out what it will feel like if another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress from the other. Allswell vs Dreamcloud

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

motion transfer test

The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

While buying a new bed, most men and women want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Allswell vs Dreamcloud

sinkage test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combination will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it will give you.

I am particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
