Construction Dreamcloud Compared To Brentwood Home

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.

Given all the different materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dreamcloud Compared To Brentwood Home

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The center of the three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at releasing heat, so the addition of these small ventilations promotes even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying mild hand pressure into the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

Now I’d like to note that individuals of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of the mattress, I invited three other people to present their view too. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this bed is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it’s definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than simply describing the feel of this DreamCloud to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally distributed throughout the mattress, so I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and from the mattress, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a partner, you will want to find out what it’ll feel like if the other individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that is detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Dreamcloud Compared To Brentwood Home

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

While buying a new mattress, most people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Compared To Brentwood Home

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re likely to experience some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your bed with a partner and need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, it’s going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I’m especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.

Laying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
