Because it’s a hybrid mattress, the DreamCloud meets many of our standards for what a quality bed must provide. With eight exceptional layers of comfort and support, the DreamCloud uses all of the proper materials in its construction. Brooklyn Bedding vs Dreamcloud
From the tufted cashmere cover that gives great airflow, to the gel memory foam at the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud was made to deliver a cooler night’s sleep. Resting below are a mixture of memory foam and latex layers, meaning this mattress includes better quality relaxation materials than most other hybrid beds.

Despite the fact that it uses multiple memory foam layers, there is not any hug or significant contouring to the mattress. If you are looking to sink into a mattress, then proceed from the DreamCloud.

A pocketed coil support center keeps you aligned all night long, particularly so for all you back sleepers on the market.

Construction Brooklyn Bedding vs Dreamcloud

The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all the different materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Brooklyn Bedding vs Dreamcloud

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant relaxation.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The middle of the three layers is especially essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at dissipating heat, so the addition of those tiny ventilations promotes even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperature as the distances between them permit steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting mild hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.

Now I want to note that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my opinion on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three additional individuals to present their opinion too. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of this mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the market norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s clear that this bed is really firm.

I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a solid bed. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from the mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to simply explaining the feel of this DreamCloud for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my back, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, therefore I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I believed that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and from the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a partner, you will want to know what it will feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to another. Brooklyn Bedding vs Dreamcloud

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.

Sinkage Test

When purchasing a new bed, most men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Brooklyn Bedding vs Dreamcloud

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your mattress with a partner and need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it will provide.

I’m particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Going closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
