Construction Luft vs Dreamcloud

The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Luft vs Dreamcloud

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft texture up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The center of the three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the addition of these small ventilations promotes more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the spaces between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from these springs.

Now I’d like to let you know that people of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of this mattress, I enlisted three additional individuals to present their opinion too. This will provide you with a much better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of this DreamCloud, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is really firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of the bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to simply explaining the feel of this DreamCloud to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I believed that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and from the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your bed with a spouse, you’ll want to know what it will feel like if the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. Luft vs Dreamcloud

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

When buying a new bed, the majority of people want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Luft vs Dreamcloud

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your mattress with a partner and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it is likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will give you.

I am particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did at the middle. Going closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
