Construction Saatva Mattress vs Dreamcloud Mattress Reviews

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all the distinct materials at play , I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Saatva Mattress vs Dreamcloud Mattress Reviews

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The middle of the three layers is especially essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the base of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure to the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.

At this point I’d like to note that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other individuals to present their opinion as well. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the market standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is clear that this bed is really firm.

Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it’s definitely a good mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from the mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to simply describing the feel of the mattress for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do so, I put a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can find the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally distributed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to shift across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like if the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of movement that is detectable from one side of the mattress to another. Saatva Mattress vs Dreamcloud Mattress Reviews

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.

Sinkage Test

While buying a new mattress, most men and women wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Saatva Mattress vs Dreamcloud Mattress Reviews

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a spouse and need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I am particularly interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
